According to reports, a joint study by Kobe University in Japan and Ushio, a Japanese LED component manufacturer, found that deep ultraviolet radiation with a wavelength of 222nm is harmless to human skin and eyes.

The deep ultraviolet wavelength of 200-280nm has sterilization effect, and has been widely used for sterilization and disinfection. However, UVC radiation is harmful to human skin due to its penetrating power. However, Kobe University and Ushiwang Research have found that in terms of the ability to eliminate bacteria on the skin, the deep ultraviolet light with a wavelength of 222nm and 254nm is equivalent to sterilization, and 222nm UVC radiation will not cause skin cancer.

This is the first time in the world to prove that direct and repeated irradiation of 222nm deep ultraviolet rays with strong bactericidal effect will not cause skin cancer, indicating that 222nm deep ultraviolet rays are safe for human eyes and skin. In view of this, this technology is expected to be widely used in sterilization and disinfection of medical institutions and daily life.

The title of this study is "Long-term effects of 222nm ultraviolet radiation C sterilizing lamps on mice susceptible to ultraviolet radiation".

The research team placed the rats under different ultraviolet radiation. One group is placed under a 222nm germicidal lamp, the other group is placed under a 280-315nm UVB light source. It was found that the mice irradiated with UVB light source had skin cancer and showed adverse reactions, while the mice irradiated with 222nm germicidal lamp did not suffer from skin cancer. In addition, they also studied the effects on the eyes of mice, and no abnormalities were found even under the microscope.

Therefore, the research team came to the conclusion that since the deep ultraviolet light with a wavelength of 222nm can only reach the outermost layer of the skin-the stratum corneum, it will not damage the DNA of skin cells, and ultimately will not produce adverse effects.

Studies have shown that deep ultraviolet radiation with a wavelength of 222nm has a strong disinfection ability and is not harmful to human skin. Therefore, this technology is expected to be widely used in the field of sterilization and disinfection.

It is reported that the results of the study have been published in the international journal "Photochemistry & Photobiology" on March 29 and will be held in Chicago on June 28 at the 2020 Biennial Meeting of the American Photobiology Society (ASP).
